Drug Abuse

Crack cocaine is considered the most serious threat to South Carolina. It is easily available and frequently abused throughout the state. In this state, cocaine abuse and distribution are often associated with crimes and law violations.

Heroin is considered a low threat to the South Carolina. Abuse and availability of this drug are concentrated only in urban and coastal areas of the state.

The most easily available and commonly abused drug in South Carolina is Marijuana. However, the abuse of this drug is seldom associated with crimes. So, it is considered a less serious threat in comparison with cocaine.

Methamphetamine is not widely available or abused in South Carolina. However, it has a growing presence in the coastal areas of the state. In the Myrtle Beach area Methamphetamine is very popular.

Among the club drugs, use and availability of ecstasy have shown a significant increase throughout the state. MDMA and GHB availability is higher in cities and tourists are the most frequent abusers. Availability and abuse of LSD are also mounting in the state. Diverted pharmaceuticals had recently been identified by the law enforcers a potential threat to the state.

22.5% of the South Carolina adults surveyed between 2001 and 2002 reported the use of marijuana once in their lifetime. According the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), around 1.11% of South Carolina citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. 30.7% of the South Carolina students, surveyed in grades 6-12 between 2001 and 2002, have used illicit drug in their lifetime at least once, and 17.9% used an illicit drug within the past 30 days. 19% of 8th graders surveyed between 2001 and 2002, reported lifetime marijuana use.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 45% of the South Carolina population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Around 14% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 61% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 46%.

In the survey, around 23% of the South Carolina people showed binge alcohol use and more than 45% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, the past month binge alcohol use is nearly 9%. In the state, 7.88% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
